Rushall is a railway station in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is located on the Epping railway line in the suburb of Fitzroy North in part of the suburb that used to be known as Rushall. The station is in Metlink Zone 1 and is located 6.1 km from the city centre by rail. The station is unmanned, with few facilities. In 2009 it was the seventh least used metropolitan railway station in Melbourne, with an average of 430 passenger boardings per day.[1]

The station is located in a small cul-de-sac, at the intersection of Falconer Street and Rushall Crescent. The station backs up to Merri Creek, but is connected to Westgarth by an 80 metre long narrow bridge for pedestrians and cyclists on the Merri Creek Trail.

Facilities

Rushall Station is arranged with two side platforms on either side of the dual railway tracks, which are connected by an underpass. Each platform has a small station building, with a Telstra payphone located on the outbound platform. As it is somewhat isolated, Rushall station tends to be little-used, however, all advertised passenger services to and from Epping stop there.

The Capital City Trail, which passes along the reservation of the Inner Circle railway line passes through the station.

In January 2009 one of its ticket machines was bombed.[2]

History

The station opened in 1927 and once played a larger role in the Melbourne rail system, as it was the eastern end of the Inner Circle, which passed between Rushall and Royal Park.

In music

Melbourne indie band Underground Lovers wrote a song named "Rushall Station", about the quietness of the site, which then became the title track for an album. The station is also mentioned in Marcel Borack's song "Ruthven to Rushall".
